SHS STUDENTS HONOR VETERANS
by: Crystal Mendoza
A ceremony sponsored by our high school student council was held on Veterans Day in our high school gym to honor our local heroes. Veterans and visitors were welcomed by JoAnna, president of the student council. The flags were posted by Caitlin and Kristina, while a poem was read by Esther.
Our superintendent, Mr. Richard Grill read out the President's Veterans Day Proclomation. Jeff Santleben, student council sponsor, introduced the guest speaker, Mr. Randy Killian Smith. Mr. Smith gave a moving speech to the veterans and students about the sacrifice it takes to serve our country.
The SHS band did a great job playing the National Anthem and patriotic music for our guests. Finally, the veterans were each recognized and asked to stand as their name and the military branch they served was read by the principal, Sean Johnston. Then, the student council presented a slide show containing photos of many our local veterans.
After the ceremony, refreshments were provided in the gym foyer. The seniors also placed a wreath at the city park in honor of our hometown heroes. Special thanks to our student council representatives and parents who helped out by providing refreshments and decorations, to the seniors, staff and to Esquivel Auto service for donating carnation corsages to be pinned on each veteran.
